We’re pretty basic animals wired to develop habits and routines. Almost half of what we do is habitual. This cuts down on thinking and allows the body to run through processes knowing what’s coming. This is why your tummy rumbles 30 mins before you usually eat lunch.
Sleep is no different. The stronger a routine you have and the less you deviate from it the easier you will find it to fall asleep. Simple.
Pick a routine that begins at least 30 mins before you get into bed. Stick to it every night. Within a few weeks or months your brain will have learned – ‘oh, we’re doing this so it’s time to sleep’.
